Chapter Ten
THREE TESTS, two oral presentations, a five-minute music solo, and a hefty lab later, and Nick went home on Friday, exhausted and glad midterms were over. He stepped into his apartment, stretched his shoulders, and tossed his book bag inside his bedroom door. It was one hell of a week. He knew the weeks heading up to finals would be worse in some ways, but for the moment, he wanted a stress reliever.
He pulled out his phone, and when he saw he had seven texts, he quickly swiped the screen with his thumb, expecting them to be from Ethan. Two were, but the other five were from Kaylee. Her message came through loud and clear within the first two texts.
I love you, Nick.
What can I do? Iâll be who you want me to be.
And they just got more pitiful from there. He could practically hear her sobbing as she wrote each line. Heâd pushed that horrible event to the back of his mind, but it hung on the periphery the whole time. Seeing those words from a girl who didnât deserve to suffer made it all come back. If some guy did that to his sister, Nick would want to hurt him.
âShit.â
He went to Ethanâs texts.
Iâm home.
Want to come over? Iâm cooking chicken and rice.
Nickâs stomach rumbled, echoing his own thoughts of yes and yum.
Iâll be there asap.
He took a quick shower, sent a text to Deke to let him know heâd be gone the rest of the evening, and headed out. Maybe Deke could invite Cara over for dinner again.
The drive went quickly, which was good, as Kayleeâs words kept rattling around in his head. Why hadnât he called things off earlier? He should have. She deserved better. When he pulled into Ethanâs drive, it was with relief that he saw his boyfriend standing in his doorway. When had he started to think of Ethan that way? He turned off the car, hopped out, and ran into Ethanâs arms.
âHey,â Ethan murmured. He placed an arm around Nickâs shoulders and guided him inside. âIâm guessing midterms were brutal.â
âThey were,â Nick admitted. He leaned against Ethan when they sat down on a sofa. âBut this was the pinnacle.â He pulled out his phone and handed it over.
Ethan glanced through the texts and sighed. âAh, guilt, I know you well.â
âI hate that sheâs hurting.â
Ethan turned Nickâs phone off and placed it on the coffee table. Then he leaned back and pulled Nick close. Nick snuggled into his embrace. âNick,â Ethan murmured. âThere was no easy way to do what you did. None. If you had ended things on your mission, she still would have felt bad.â
âBut I would have been too busy to know.â
âAh, Nicky,â Ethan sighed. Nick had never liked the name Nicky from anyone else, but Ethan had used it twice, and he had to admit it sounded good from Ethanâs lips. âYouâll never feel good about what you did, but we need to get rid of that guilt. Itâs just going to wear you down.
